“One must always be careful of books," said Tessa, "and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.”
You know when you finish a book but you don't really know what to say about it because it was really awesome? So, this is the case! I'm here dying because I don't have enough words to explain how much I loved this reading!
I think that when I read the first book of 'The Mortal Instruments' by that genius lady named Cassandra Clare ('City of Bones') I mentioned that that was my FAVORITE BOOK EVER... or something like that, and right now I'm here telling you that I was wrong... 'City of Bones' is not my favorite book, 'Clockwork Angel' is... I don't really know what am I going to think about the rest of the series but this one? OMG... this one was awesome. I don't have words... seirously!
I think I loved everything in it... if I could I'd give to it 10 stars, it was magnificient. I loved the fact that the story is passed around 1878 (yes, yes... I have an old soul! Kidding!)... I loved the detailed description of everything... I loved the characters, the way they speak... I loved pretty much everything!
Basically if anyone had asked me which character I loved the most (between Tessa and Will - of course...) I couldn't tell... I just really don't know, I love both (but since I'm a girl and since my heart is pretty much melted I can confer you that I love Mr. William Herondale... so basically he is my new passion!)
“Only the very weak-minded refuse to be influenced by literature and poetry.”
As you probably know already, this is a prequel to 'The Mortal Instruments'. The 'creatures' are the same... it's like on both of the series you have Shadowhunters and Downworlders...
Shadowhunters are half angel/half human and resuming they kill demons and some Downworlders now and then, but they have a pact... they can't hurt each other, so basically they do that just only when it is strictly necessary.
Downworlders are subdivided into several categories: they can be vampires (humans turned into 'blood suckers'), warlocks, werewolves, fairies (that are half angel and half demon)... basically every single 'magic' creature you can imagine!
Humans... humans are nothing, they are just called mundanes!
“Will looked horrified. "What kind of monster could possibly hate chocolate?”
I don't know if I ever mentioned but I'm not the biggest fan of 3rd person past tense... but I'm a HUGE fan of Cassandra Clare... so reading in the 3rd person is not that bad when you are reading a great story as this one, and I assure you that this is one of the books that you don't mind that it's written in the 3rd person past tense! Because this is awesome!
This book had me lost within the pages... basically my world disappeared completly and when I looked around I was in London... I was in a beautiful place, I was in 1878 lost in time... and believe me, I didn't want to come home!
Since the very first moment I started reading this book I got myself into it... it just sucked me in... I couldn't stop! It was like someone was controlling me, controlling my emotions... CONTROLLING MY FREAKING LIFE!
The next part of this review contains spoiler... so if you didn't read this book and you want to... just stop right there!
Resuming, this story (as everyone should know, since I'm the last person on this entire planet reading this book!) is about, like I said before, a community of Shadowhunters and Downworlders (of course... separated communities, not the same one).
So, the book starts with William Herondale and James Carstairs finding a dead body of a forteen-year-old girl named Emma in an alley. With the body they also find a dagger imprinted with two snakes.
Then there is Theresa Gray (known as Tessa). She arrives at the Southampton dock expecting to find her brother Nate waiting for her but he's not there.
Six weeks later, Tessa has been held prisoner by the Dark Sisters (believe me... you don't want to know them... they are horrible creatures), they have been training her to Change (basically she takes on the appearance of someone else, doesn't matter if that someone else is a living person or a dead person!).
After a LOT of things happen (I'll not tell all the story because if I do... tomorrow I'm still here... sitting in front of the computer re-writting the entire book...) a battle begins between Will and two other Shadowhunters and The Dark Sisters, in which Mrs. Black is killed. Tessa is taken to the Institute in London with the others and she is examined by one of the Silent Brothers... and since that moment Tessa life turns into an adventure... (something like that...)
And that's it... I'm not going to tell you any more of this! I just needed to tell you the beginning of the story because I thought that that was perfect... and that beginning!? OMG... that beginning sucked me in! And that's basically why I was a spoiler for 5 minutes!
